Babies and young children are especially vulnerable to injury, particularly burns. Each year in the United States more than 10,000 babies are burned seriously enough to require hospitalization. Burn injuries are also the second leading cause of accidental death among children under the age of fourteen.
A burn that might only cause discomfort to an adult can be very serious for a baby. A baby's skin is much more sensitive to heat than an adult's. Unfortunately, babies are more likely to be burned in the home than any other age group. Babies are curious, fearless and not well coordinated. They will touch almost anything, anywhere and any way they can. For this reason parents need to be aware of household hazards and be on guard to keep babies out of danger.
