SUMMARY:Burn Survivor Poetry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Burn Institute is excited to announce a new Burn Survivor event. On June 8 at 6.30pm we will hold a Burn Survivor Poetry Workshop class hosted by Michael Williamson. This event will be virtual. \nThis event is open to the public and everyone is welcome to join. Please contact Leilani at lstone@burninstitute.org for registration information. \nMore information about Michael: \nMy name is Michael Williamson\, I am a burn survivor\, activist and poet. I have been a burn survivor for two years\, and am still in recovery getting treatment at UCSD Hillcrest. I have been connected with the Burn Institute now for two years\, and have participated in the circle of friends meet-ups\, holiday events and burn retreats. When I am not busy with medical appointments and surgeries\, I spend a lot of time in deep-thought. What does that mean? I like to read and write often. Whether it’s poetry\, short-story\, journaling\, or writing screenplays\, I find myself always thinking about the next character\, plot-point\, or crucial line to finish the punch! I am 32 years old and living single in the beautiful city of Chula Vista close to the 805 freeway. My favorite film is the Lion King\, and my favorite book is Of Mice and Men. A little bit about my injury: In 2018\, I burned myself…Which really means I hurt myself. It is difficult to answer the question “Why?” did I burn myself because so many things were happening in my life that led to that decision. Whether or not that was a good or bad decision is irrelevant\, what matters is that I am alive today!  \n???? \nI am thankful to be alive today\, and I am grateful to be a part of the Burn Institute. \n

SUMMARY:Open Mic Community Event
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling is an important force in healing from a burn injury. The Open Mic Community Event Series is open to anyone who identifies as a survivor of a burn injury and their loved ones. It is an open space to share personal accounts\, stories\, and create empowerment and unity among the burn community. To attend this event\, you are not required to speak; you’re welcome to join the event to support others sharing their stories. \nWhat do you mean by story? Our personal accounts – what we have survived\, what these experiences mean to us\, and the things we have learned along the way – are what we mean by “stories.” Stories can be communicated with or without words\, literal or metaphorical\, happy\, sad\, or both! We welcome creative expression and aim to share an open\, nonjudgmental space. Our community of burn survivors and loved ones is diverse and filled with various stories of recovery and growth. Wherever you are in your journey\, there’s a strong possibility that there is someone in the community whose story might resonate with you – or vice versa. \nPlease note: Content shared at this event and stories shared may be difficult to hear. For this reason\, this event may not be appropriate for all ages. Please be mindful when bringing young children. \nRSVP \nAsk A Question

SUMMARY:Firefighter Boot Drive
DESCRIPTION:What began 20 years ago as a grassroots effort backed by the fire service\, the Burn Institute’s countywide Boot Drive has become a hallmark fundraiser for the organization\, raising an average $200\,000+ for BI programs and services every year. \nEach year\, hundreds of uniformed firefighters from fire departments all over San Diego County come together for a common goal\, hopping aboard their engines to meet at intersections within their communities. At those traffic lights\, they collect donations in their boots during the morning and evening commutes. Each year\, passing motorists help to fill those boots with their spare change – $1\, $5\, $20 – even $100 bills. No matter the economy or weather\, San Diegans have always given generously. \nProceeds benefit the Burn Institute fire and burn prevention education programs\, and burn survivor support programs\, such as Camp Beyond the Scars for burn-injured children 8–17 years old. The Burn Institute’s unique camp program has provided a safe place for many hundreds of young burn survivors to share their experiences in a supportive camp environment. \nSponsored by the San Diego-Imperial County Firefighters Advisory Council and the San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association\, the Burn Institute’s Annual Firefighter Boot Drive is the organization’s largest 1-day fundraiser. As always\, the top fire department from each region will win the Burn Institute’s highly coveted bronze Boot Drive trophy. \nAll the funds raised through the Boot Drive will stay in San Diego and Imperial Counties. \nList of Boot Drive Intersections\n
