DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FOR CAMP 2023 OPENS MARCH 27\nCamp Beyond the Scars is a weeklong sleepaway summer camp for children between the ages of 8–17 who have experienced a burn injury. Our camp provides a relaxed social setting\, which supports burn-injured children so they can have fun\, learn coping skills\, and build relationships with other burn survivors. \nUnder the supervision of staff and volunteers\, campers get to do what kids do best – have fun! SUMMARY:Firefighter Boot Drive
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 25 Years of Courage and Care! What began as a grassroots effort backed by the fire service\, the Burn Institute’s countywide Boot Drive has become a hallmark fundraiser for the organization\, raising an average $200\,000+ for BI programs and services every year. \nEach year\, hundreds of uniformed firefighters from fire departments all over San Diego County come together for a common goal\, hopping aboard their engines to meet at intersections within their communities. At those traffic lights\, they collect donations in their boots during the morning and evening commutes. Each year\, passing motorists help to fill those boots with their spare change – $1\, $5\, $20 – even $100 bills. No matter the economy or weather\, San Diegans have always given generously. \nThis year we are again expanding ways to give in order to ensure the safety of our first responders and community. Banners with QR codes will hang at participating fire stations throughout the month promoting the Firefighter Boot Drive. The banners and the signage used will also include QR codes for contactless payment as a way to give. \nProceeds benefit the Burn Institute fire and burn prevention education programs\, and burn survivor support programs\, such as Camp Beyond the Scars for burn-injured children 8–17 years old. The Burn Institute’s unique camp program has provided a safe place for many hundreds of young burn survivors to share their experiences in a supportive camp environment. \nThe Burn Institute’s Annual Firefighter Boot Drive is the organization’s largest 1-day fundraiser. \nAll the funds raised through the Boot Drive will stay in San Diego and Imperial Counties. \nList of Boot Drive Intersections\n

SUMMARY:Burn Survivor Family Day Getaway - San Diego
DESCRIPTION:Our Burn Survivor Family Day Getaway is a support-based program designed for burn survivors\, ages 0-7 years old and their immediate family members (parents and siblings). This unique program helps children along with their families understand and cope with the physical and emotional challenges associated with burn recovery. Family Day Getaway will provide an opportunity for families to spend time with others overcoming similar challenges in an informal\, supportive camp setting. \nThe program focuses on healthy emotional and physical recovery with an emphasis on providing the children the opportunity to socialize with other burn survivors. this is an opportunity to meet other parents of child survivors in a group setting. SUMMARY:Spirit of Courage Awards
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Burn Institute pays tribute to a special set of local heroes. These heroes risked their lives in an effort to save another person from burn injury or death. \nIn 1974\, members of a local support group for burn survivors\, Burns Recovered\, approached the Burn Institute with the idea of honoring these courageous citizens. Many of the burn survivors were rescued by such brave individuals. Naturally\, they wanted to express their strong appreciation publicly. The Burn Institute supported the concept and has continued to present these awards for the past 50 years. The Annual Spirit of Courage Awards banquet is a community service of the Burn Institute. \nCitizens are nominated by local fire service and law enforcement agencies.
