The San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association and the Burn Institute Auxiliary have joined together to raise funds for the fire and burn prevention education and burn survivor support programs of the Burn Institute. Every year, we host a spirited 5K to support our organization and promote Burn Awareness Week (February 1-7, 2020). This family-friendly run is being held on Saturday, February 1 at De Anza Cove on Mission Bay. The event will showcase community partners, including local fire service, as part of our Burn Prevention Expo and focus on raising awareness for contact burns--when skin comes in contact with a hot object like coals from a fire-pit or a hot iron. What began 20 years ago as a grassroots effort backed by the fire service, the Burn Institute’s countywide Boot Drive has become a hallmark fundraiser for the organization, raising an average $200,000+ for BI programs and services every year. Each year, hundreds of uniformed firefighters from fire departments all over San Diego County come together for a common goal, hopping aboard their engines to meet at intersections within their communities. Each year, the Burn Institute pays tribute to a special set of local heroes. These heroes risked their lives in an effort to save another person from burn injury or death. In 1974, members of a local support group for burn survivors, Burns Recovered, approached the Burn Institute with the idea of honoring these courageous citizens.
