Position: Director of Prevention Programs

FLSA Status: Fulltime, Exempt

Reports to: Executive Director

Location: 8825 Aero Drive, Suite 200, San Diego, CA 92123

Primary Responsibilities:  Serving as a member of the Management Team along with the Executive Director, Director of Marketing and Events, Director of Burn Survivor Services and Director of Operations, this position’s primary responsibility is ensuring effectiveness by providing leadership for the organization’s fire and burn prevention programs.

Working with the management team, the position also contributes to the development and implementation of strategies to continuously improve and measure the organization’s community outreach and prevention programs. This position will also interact with the Board of Directors and the community at large.

Direct Report: Community Outreach personnel including, Senior Smoke Alarm Program Coordinator, Prevention Education Coordinator, Imperial Valley Community Outreach Specialist and Youth Firesetter Intervention Coordinator.


  1. Play a significant role in long-term planning, including an initiative geared toward the organization’s excellence in programs and community outreach.
  2. Develop and manage annual prevention program budget.
  3. Implement, manage and evaluate various prevention programs.
  4. Supervise, motivate and coach prevention personnel and any interns associated with program.
  5. Monitor projects to ensure goals are met.
  6. Positively represent the organization at various events and throughout the community.
  7. Meet with stakeholders to discuss program status and goals.
  8. Work with Director of Marketing to improve communication strategies.
  9. Work with Grantwriter to compile data and outcomes.
  10. Stay apprised of current trends in fire and burn prevention.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Other: Attend board meetings and any other meetings and/or conferences as requested. Must possess and maintain California Driver’s License and automobile insurance. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and work in a dynamic fast paced setting. Employment at the Burn Institute is at-will.  Flexibility: Occasional weekend and evening hours as necessary and travel as needed. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

Knowledge and Skills:  Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years prior experience in non-profit sector; health and human services setting required. A minimum of three years supervisory and management experience required in program administration including needs assessment, development, delivery, management and evaluation.  Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills required to inspire and lead staff.  Strong public speaking talents necessary and the willingness to work with a wide range of people, community partners and volunteers. Must have the ability to work independently and also effectively communicate with co-workers, supervisors and the public. Must be positive, organized, analytical and a capable problem-solver.
