“Camp is where I feel the most like ‘me'”

Camp Beyond the Scars this year had campers reflect on the word of the day to help EMPOWER them to tell their stories, INSPIRE them to make new friends, use BRAVERY when confronting new challenges, and embrace COMPASSION for one another. These words were tested out during traditional camp activities like swimming, s’mores, arts & crafts, rock wall climbing and more. Campers also had the opportunity to connect with one another as burn survivors to continue building up their community through nightly support groups.

“I love camp because I can play with my friends and no one is going to laugh at me or my scars”

Camp Beyond the Scars counselors helped facilitate the activities and act as guides and mentors. They are a mix of burn survivors, firefighters, and volunteers who help make this experience unique and meaningful to our young campers. UC San Diego Regional Burn Center nurses also made sure everyone had band aids, ice packs, bug spray, and anti-itch cream to to help keep the kids going.
