Camp Beyond the Scars
During the first week of August, 67 burn-injured children came together in a comforting environment to have some serious fun! Camp Beyond the Scars, established in 1987, is the Burn Institute’s hallmark burn survivor support program specifically designed for children, ages 5-17. The program provides a supportive atmosphere where each child can learn how to deal with the emotional and physical hardships they face as a result of their burn trauma. Held in an environment with caring counselors and fellow burn survivors, young campers build self-esteem and improve coping skills. For many, camp is the first time they have the opportunity to meet other young burn survivors just like them. Campers come from all over Southern California, and even as far as Nevada.
This year’s summer program took place at Oakbridge Camp located in Ramona. During their action packed week away, campers participated in a number of lively activities including a BMX & skateboarding demo, laser tag, wacky team challenges, swimming and water sports, archery, arts & crafts, a visit from therapy pets, yoga and much more! Camp activities are led by volunteer counselors who are off-duty firefighters, medical professionals, educators and adult burn survivors that have generously donated their time.
